Excerpt from Changing Light:
After getting off the phone with Faith, Josh pulled his car to the side of the road and got out to stretch his legs and clear his head. A magazine assignment had taken him to Boothbay Harbor, and Faith had called with the news about Daniel as he was on his way back to Portland. Now he just wanted to walk and think . . . or walk and not think. The return of Daniel’s leukemia brought a rush of memories that were still raw . . . memories of losing Jordan, his only brother. Faith couldn’t lose a brother. She just couldn’t. It hurt too much, and he didn’t want her to hurt the way he had. Of course, the circumstances were completely different, but still. A loss was something that forever affected the ones left behind. And it wouldn’t be only Faith losing a brother and Andy and Emily losing a son. Josh himself felt inexplicably drawn to Daniel with a big-brotherly bond he thought he’d never experience again. To lose once . . . well, he was learning to deal with it. But to lose twice . . . he didn’t know if he could deal with that. He trekked along a copse of trees, reminiscing on his first encounter with Faith and Daniel. What was it Jessica had told him about the art gallery deck where they met? She got her first kiss there? Her uncle met his wife there last summer? It was a deck with a history? He’d better be careful if he went up there? At the time, he’d laughed off that warning, but now . . . Now he couldn’t deny the fact that two people he’d met there only a few months ago had changed his life in ways he never dreamed possible. Daniel Parker had managed to worm his way into Josh’s life as only Daniel could. And Faith. Well, he couldn’t believe he was letting a Sunday Girl turn his heart upside down. But then there was that Trent guy in Dallas, and Josh didn’t know exactly where he stood in the food chain of Faith’s admirers. Out of sight, out of mind. He really hoped that adage proved to be true in this case. |
